St. Louis singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Smith has played and sung bluegrass, progressive folk, new acoustic music, and alternative country with countless groups and singer-songwriters, including the eclectic acoustic trio The Gateway Ramblers. As a solo musician, Ben devotes much of his attention to his original music, placing his singing and playing in the service of deeply felt, thoughtfully arranged, and eminently melodic songs.

Ben’s EP, Any Place Is Home (available for download on the “Music” page), features five songs recorded in Tupelo, Mississippi and St. Louis between 2006 and 2011. Though it straddles his move north and represents the influence of countless musical partnerships, the collection coheres: the four original songs and one traditional fiddle tune share a debt to traditional forms and acoustic instrumentation, even as Ben’s lyrical and vocal inflections stand intriguingly in relief.

With no plans for another demo or similarly structured project, Ben nevertheless continues to record traditional and original music, which he makes available via and his YouTube channel. He performs live as often as his schedule allows, and he particularly looks forward to booking solo engagements for the summer months.
